RealEye Hardware & Software Requirements

Discover the recommended and minimal hardware and software requirements for RealEye's optimal performance.


RealEye is an online, webcam-based eye-tracking platform that enables researchers to conduct studies without external hardware. To ensure optimal performance consider the following hardware and software requirements:

Data Collection

Desktops & Laptops:

Recommended Setup

  • Webcam: 1920x1080p (Full HD) at 30 frames per second (FPS) or 1280x720p (HD) at 60 FPS
  • Browser: Latest versions of Google Chrome or Safari
  • Operating System: Updated Windows 11 or macOS X
  • Processor: 4-core Intel processor, 3 GHz or faster, 5th generation or later
  • Power Source: Laptops must be connected to a power source
  • Memory: 8 GB of RAM with at least 4 GB available
  • Graphics: DirectX 12-compatible graphics card with updated drivers; integrated Intel Graphics (5th generation or later) is sufficient
  • Internet Connection: Minimum 20 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload speeds (especially for live screen recording)


Minimum Setup

While RealEye can function with lower specifications, accuracy and precision may be reduced. Furthermore, with the eye-tracking sampling rate may below 20 Hz, RealEye will not provide any data for fixations.

  • Webcam: 640x480p at 15 FPS
  • Browser: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, or Safari
  • Operating System: Windows 7/10, macOS X, or Linux (e.g., Ubuntu)
  • Memory: At least 0.5 GB of available RAM
  • Display Resolution: Minimum 1024x600 pixels
  • Internet Connection: Minimum 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds


Additional Notes

  • Only horizontal screen orientation is supported.
  • The page scaling should be set to 100% - ensure that no zoom is applied (press CTRL+0 in Chrome to reset).
  • Firefox is not recommended due to lack of hardware acceleration support.
  • Live (Embedded) Websites and Hosted Sessions may require a faster CPU than image or video-type studies.
  • Ensure other software does not consume excessive CPU or RAM resources.

  • It is recommended that the camera is on top of the device, as it decreases the chance to cover the camera lense accidentaly.

  • Ensure other software does not consume excessive CPU or RAM resources.

Once your data collection is complete, RealEye provides an intuitive dashboard for analysis. The platform enables researchers to efficiently visualize and interpret eye-tracking data. Here’s how you can make the most of it:

  • Display Resolution: 1920x1080p (Full HD)
  • CPU: Dual-core processor > 2.5 GHz
  • RAM: Minimum 8 GB
  • Operating System: Windows 10/11 (with recent updates), or macOS 10.12 Sierra or later
  • Browser: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge
