(Not) recording video data
Learn how realeye protects participant privacy while using webcam-based eye tracking technology.
We understand that privacy is a major concern for both researchers and participants, and we want to be transparent about how data is handled.
RealEye does not record or store any visual data from the webcam, such as videos, images, or facial recordings. The webcam is used only for real-time gaze estimation, and all processing happens locally in the participant’s web browser. No webcam video or images are sent to external servers or stored by RealEye.
During the calibration process, the system temporarily analyzes how a participant’s face looks when they focus on specific areas of the screen. This information is used only to predict gaze position in real time and is not saved or transmitted.
In Screen Recording study types, however, additional permissions may be required depending on the study setup:
-
If the researcher enables voice-over, participants will be asked to allow access to their microphone, and audio may be recorded as part of the screen recording.
-
If the study involves tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet, where participant is required to share their entire screen, the screen recording may include the participant’s camera feed if it is visible on the shared screen.
In these cases, any recorded audio or video is a result of the screen recording configuration chosen by the researcher, not RealEye eye-tracking technology itself. Outside of these explicitly enabled features, no visual or audio data is recorded or transmitted.
